Our Brand Story

Modern nostalgia.

MARIBOU is brand that touches on the past, while simultaneously cultivating a modern spirit.

The first collection is a range of twelve statement earrings leaning into the sculptural element of jewellery, with a nod to the eighties & nineties.

Petite sculptures to wear, that will instantly elevate your outfit and your mood.

Further accessories categories to come in time.

Behind the name.

The name MARIBOU is intended to evoke this feeling of modern nostalgia.

It hints at the marabout feathers used to embellish shoes and accessories from the late 18th century right through to the 1960s.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art states that ‘no object better epitomises the sex kitten glamour of the 1950s than the marabout mule.’

The pieces are special and intended to be the final flourish to any outfit at any age, whether it’s jeans and a t-shirt, or a black tie gown.

A way to encourage self expression.

Design Ethos.

This is a solo project of Sophie Brooke Hardy. A New Zealand native currently based in Melbourne Australia. A culmination of her background in accessories design, jewellery design, fashion design, and art history.

Leveraging her experience in both fine jewellery, and costume/fashion jewellery, MARIBOU is the place where a lifetime of inspiration is transformed into a tangible form.

The way she approaches design is thoughtful, intentional, and with meticulous attention to detail.

Materials & Processes.

The collection is a counter response to the fastness of todays’ consumerism. It has embraced recycled materials wherever possible, alongside high quality metals chosen for their longevity such as 18 karat gold, sterling silver, and hand painted enamel.

These are pieces that are designed to last. High density plating at 1.5micron thickness has been used to ensure longevity.

Packaging is luxurious yet thoughtful, and also uses recycled materials and deadstock fabrics.

The intention is to create sentimental pieces that people will cherish and treasure for decades to come.
